Post-doc position in Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), Umea University, Sweden

  • Project description : Following uptake into host cells, flaviviruses reprograms the cell into becoming a factory for the production of new viruses. The viral proteins induce the generation of cavities in cellular organelles, so called replication vesicles, which protect the replicated RNA from detection and degradation by the cellular response system. Today, very little is known about the mechanisms that lead replication vesicle formation. We take a novel approach using the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) model system to characterize the mechanisms for how viral proteins remodel cellular membranes into replication vesicles.
  • Methods : This study involves biochemical characterisation of viral proteins and development of molecular tools to study the mechanism behind replication vesicles formation in host cells. Virology will be combined with a biochemical approach to study membrane curvature generation and induction of replication vesicles. The project applies advanced fluorescent live cell imaging and STORM super-resolution imaging. Further techniques involve handling of viruses, cell culture, ProteinBiochemistry, and standard cell/molecular biology techniques.
  • Position description : The position is fulltime for 2 years.
  • Location : Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden and the department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics located at Umeå University, provides well- equipped common facilities and excellent platforms for imaging and ProteinBiochemistry. This creative, inspiring and highly interactive environment is excellent for collaborative work.
  • Application details for Post-doc fellowship : We are looking for enthusiastic candidates with experience from infectious studies and a biochemical and cell biological background. The applicant should have received or be about to receive a Ph.D. in cell/molecular biology or a related discipline. Prior experience of Biochemistry and fluorescent microscopy in active research lab will be an added advantage as well as experience of viral research. The successful candidate is expected to design and execute his or her project independently but also work in close collaboration with the other members of the team. The application should contain: CV with information on education, a list of previous and current employments, list of publications, a personal letter and contact details of three references.

Deadline : 24.10.14
