Doctoral (PhD) student position in Bioinformatics at Karolinska Institutet, Department of Cell and molecular biology
Karolinska Institutet, Department of Cell and molecular biology (CMB). CMB is a department with a strong focus on basic science. The research groups are organized in three thematic programs: Developmental and Stem Cell Biology, Cell Biology and Infection and Cancer. CMB conducts research and education in Cell Biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, stem Cell Biology, cancer and infection biology
- Research group : Our area of research is the use of genomics and Bioinformatics to study organism biology focused on infectious agents. The main projects are broad screening to study the human microbiome, with a particular focus on the composition of the human virome, including previously unknown viruses, in different diseases; comparative genomics in parasitic disease causing protozoa, including trypanosomes, and participation in the large Norway spruce genome project, including comparative conifer genomics. We are associated with Science for Life Laboratory, which is a center for large scale bioscience with a focus on medical and environmental research
- We now offer a PhD student position to a motivated applicant with a degree in Bioinformatics, computational methods and computer modeling. The research project will involve analyses of complex genomic data sets using Bioinformatics methods and particularly the development of such methods by programming and algorithm development.
- The doctoral education project and the duties of the student : The overall goal for the PhD project is to study microorganisms that infect humans using metagenomics. Clinical tests from different patient groups will form the basis for the analyzes. The student will therefore be trained in research on genomics, Microbiology, infection and disease biology. The project is supported by a multi-year grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation
General entry requirements : A person meets the general entry requirements for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education (according to Higher Education Ordinance Chapt 7, section 39) if he/she:
- has been awarded advanced/second-cycle/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle/master level, or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Skills and personal qualities :
- To be qualified, at least a masters degree in Bioinformatics is required, and preferably a prior background in computer science. Documented skill in Bioinformatics and computer modeling is a plus. Good knowledge regarding computational methods and programming in Python, Perl, C++, PHP/Javascript are also a plus.
- A good knowledge of the English language in both spoken and written is required. Other important aspects are good social skills and interpersonal skills. Experience with analysis of RNAseq data, work with single cell information and work with genome data visualization and microbiome data are considered as useful merits.
Application process : An application must contain the following documents in Swedish or English:
- A personal letter and curriculum vitae
- A copy of degree certificates and associated certificates
- A copy of degree projects and any previous publications
Deadline : 16.10.14
