Job description:

TIC Gums has an immediate opening for a Sr./Lead Microbiologist based out of our manufacturing site in Belcamp, MD.  The Sr. Microbiologist is responsible for leading food safety improvements, maintenance of food safety programs , risk reduction, and leading the Microbiology team.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Operates and maintains a safe, accident-free laboratory environment.  Maintains skills required to safely and properly operate specified laboratory Instruments and equipment.
  • Responsible for reducing or eliminating overall microbiological-related risks of the business including finished product, raw materials and processes.
  • Is responsible for the training, development, and coaching of all direct reports of the Microbiological laboratory including proper documentation of all training records and evaluations.  Oversees training for laboratory staff for microbiological food safety related issues.
  • Manages the day-to-day activities of the Microbiological laboratory; establishes work schedules to accommodate production and/or customer requirements.  Including coordinating the purchasing of laboratory supplies and equipment following budgetary guidelines.
  • Assures compliance of the microbiological lab and staff to company, industry and regulatory requirements while adhering to standard safety, GLP and GMP standards.
  • Provides microbiological expertise and performs studies for diverse teams inside and outside the company
  • Applies expertise to existing processes and process improvements, problem solving/complaint resolution and new market opportunities.
  • Analyzes, negotiates and implements customer or industry microbiological specifications.
  • Ensures constant readiness for and successful completion of customer and 3rd party audits including supporting systems, audit visits and follow-up activities

Desired Skills and Experience:

                                                                                

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 5 years of experience in a Microbiology position.  Biological science degree required. Supervisory experience preferred.  Experience in manufacturing evironment is highly preferred. 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Must possess good communication and organizational skills and be able to write QA procedures and instructions.  Computer experience with Windows, Excel, and Word required.  Experience with ISO, GMP and GLP desired.  Must be able to work overtime and weekend hours, as needed.

TRAVEL: Occasional travel required, if necessary.
