The Foundation for Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT) is a public trust and a non-government organization that is based in Bengaluru, India. The vision of the organization is ‘Revitalization of Indian Medical Heritage’ through creative application of contemporary sciences and technology. FRLHT also works to restore the oral health traditions rooted in the community, in order to strengthen self-reliance in rural and urban households. In 2013, FRLHT created a Private University that was legislated by the state of Karnataka, named the Institute of Trans-Disciplinary Health Sciences and Technology, in short known as the Trans-disciplinary University (TDU) (www.tdu.edu.in). TDU was created with an objective of scaling up the research, education and outreach potential of FRLHT. Project background: 2.2 million people die of diarrhoea, most of whom are children under the age of five from developing countries. Drinking water that is contaminated with certain faecal bacteria and viruses causes infectious diarrhoea. This can be prevented by providing safe drinking water. FRLHT-TDU has developed and standardized a low-cost drinking water purification device that can kill the pathogens. The current project phase requires development of sustainable model(s) to manufacture and distribute the water purification device to the target population in India. Simultaneously research into the Science and Technology of the device would be undertaken for a better health impact.
