Vacancy for Research Officer
The Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3-D) and the Division of Medical Microbiology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, seek an expert mycobacteriologist with significant knowledge of tuberculosis (TB) drug discovery to drive the biology activities of the H3-D TB drug discovery programme. This is a full time, five year contract. Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant biological science and should have obtained >4 years’ postdoctoral experience in the biology of TB drug discovery. This is a hands-on position which requires established skills in mycobacteriology and molecular biology.
Essential qualifications:
- PhD in Microbiology, molecular biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or Cell Biology
- 4 years’ postdoctoral experience in the area of TB drug discovery with a track record of achievement, including publications in international peer-reviewed journals
- High level of knowledge of Global Health drug discovery and pre-clinical development
- Established skills in molecular biology and mycobacterial genetics are essential

- Capacity to work independently and give guidance to co-workers and team members
- Good attention to detail with the ability to identify and implement creative solutions
Key responsibilities:
- Develop, conduct, and oversee in vitro and ex vivo screening and biological profiling strategies for TB drug discovery and development
- Participate in TB project activities with a multi-disciplinary team of microbiologists, molecular biologists, biochemists, medicinal chemists, and pharmacologists
- Be actively involved in H3-D TB drug discovery projects with collaborating groups at UCT and internationally
- Contribute to the ability of the TB project teams to network with internal and external experts
The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is between R394 820 and R528 275, and is dependent on skills and experience.
