Applications invited for British Chevening Scholarships for Masters aspirants in UK, 2016

About the Scholarship

Chevening Scholarships in India are awarded to outstanding emerging leaders to pursue a one-year Master’s at any UK university. The scholarship programme provides a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK. A Chevening Scholarship offers financial support along with the opportunity to become part of the highly regarded and influential Chevening global network.

Applicants from India can choose any course of study, but we particularly welcome applications in the following fields:

  • Energy security
  • Climate change
  • Urban development
  • Defence
  • Security
  • Foreign policy
  • Trade and investment
  • Economic reforms
  • Research and innovation

Funding organisations for the Chevening Scholarship:

Chevening is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and partner organisations. These partners contribute to Chevening in various ways, helping to develop talented individuals from across the globe who will go on to be future leaders and decision makers.The  partner organisations co-sponsor Chevening Awards  enabling the offer to more Chevening Scholars the opportunity to study in the UK.

If the application is successful and the candidate has applied to study a subject or degree programme supported by one of these partner organisations, the candidate will be considered for a co-sponsored Chevening Award.

What does the scholarship cover?

  • university tuition fees 
  • a monthly stipend
  • travel costs to and from the UK
  • an arrival allowance
  • a homeward departure allowance
  • a thesis grant
  • a grant for study materials
  • a study travel allowance
  • the cost of one visa application
  • a travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK

Eligibility criteria for the scholarship:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country.
  • Return to the country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after the scholarship has ended
  • Have an undergraduate degree that will enable entry to a post-graduate programme at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK
  • Have at least two years’ work experience
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 14th July,2016
  • Meet the Chevening English language requirement by 14th July,2016

The candidate is not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if  they:

  • Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong)
  • Are an employee, a relative of an employee, or a former employee (since July 2013) of Her Majesty’s Government (including British Embassies/High Commissions, the Department for International Development, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, UK Trade and Investment, the Ministry of Defence and the Home Office), the British Council, a partner, a sponsoring UK university, or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
  • Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship. Chevening Alumni are not eligible to apply for a further scholarship but may be eligible to apply for a fellowship five years after completion of the first award.

Information for applicants:

Applications for Chevening Scholarships can only be submitted using the Chevening online application system, available through the 'apply' button on the official webpage.Prior to starting the application for a Chevening Scholarship please ensure that the following documents are ready:

Essential:

  • Two references to be provided in a letter format and written in English
  • Valid passport/national ID card
  • University transcripts (undergraduate, postgraduate)
  • Three different UK Master's course choices (Please note that only documents in PDF format can be uploaded and documents cannot be over 5MB in size).

Optional:

  • English language (if already met the requirements) 
  • UK Master's university offer (if already met the requirements)

The  initial application can be submitted without these optional documents and uploaded to the application at any point up to 14th July,2016. 

Applications close on 3rd November at 12:00 GMT (midday UK time).
