PhD student position in Stem Cell Research at the Medical University of Vienna

Two PhD student positions are open now at the Medical University of Vienna, Department of Medicine I, Division of Hematology and Hemostaseology, in Austria, Europe. The positions are financed by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). Successful applicants will work under the supervision of AProf. Philipp Staber MD, PhD.   • Project description : Our research focuses on the blood system as a key model for stem cell differentiation and cancer formation. We aim to decipher the molecular cues of distinct chromosomal loop structures that regulate noncoding transcription and coordinate site-specific epigenetic gene silencing. We will utilize techniques involving a combination of approaches including mechanistic mouse models and cell lines, primary patient samples, high-throughput genomics approaches including next generation sequencing, RNA-/RIP-sequencing, whole genome bisulfite-sequencing, chromosome conformation capturing, and Hi-C.

Requirements :

  • Master of science (MSc) or equivalent university degree in Biological sciences, chemistry, medicine or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience with mouse models, basic molecular / Cell Biology methods, and cancer biology.
  • Fluent written and spoken English. Knowledge of the German language is not required. 
  • Provide a motivation letter explaining your commitment to science. 
  • Provide a detailed curriculum vitae including scholarships, prizes, awards, presentations at meetings, and publications (if already applicable at this early stage of the career).
  • Provide a synopsis of your diploma and bachelor theses. 
  • Provide two letters of recommendation. 
  • Excellent work ethic, very good communication skills and ability to work in a team in an international environment.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity and a proactive approach to solving problems and developing new ideas.
