CSIR-NIO was established on 1 January 1966 following the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) in the 1960s. The institute has since grown into a multi-disciplinary oceanographic research institute of international repute. The principal focus of research has been on observing and understanding special oceanographic characteristics of the Indian Ocean. The results have been reported in more than 5000 research articles so far.

- MSc Marine Biology / Microbiology / Life Science
- Experience in microbiological work
- The candidate must be an excellent team worker who would be expected to perform the full complement of research experiments required towards the furtherance of the project, maintain accurate data, perform critical data analyses, prepare/make presentations and review and annotate literature.
- Specific assignments may include but would not be restricted to participation in ocean cruises, isolation, identification and preservation of microorganisms, maintenance of microbial reference facility, antibiotic resistance and toxic gene profiling, take responsibilities in support of the laboratory in general.
- The candidate while working independently must interact closely with the supervisor and implement the decisions from time to time.
