Sankara Nethralaya (SN) is a not-for-profit missionary institution for ophthalmic care (i.e., an eye hospital) in Chennai, India. In "Sankara Nethralaya" Sankara is a reference to Adi Shankaracharya and Nethralaya means "The Temple of the Eye". Sankara Nethralaya receives patients from India and internationally.Nani A. Palkivala, former Indian ambassador to United States, described Sankara Nethralaya as the "Best managed charitable organization in India". Sankara Nethralaya has 1000 employees and serves 1200 patients per day, performing 100 surgeries per day. The annual revenue as per the taxes is close to US$100 million.
About the Programme : he Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya conducts Hands-on Summer Training Programme in biomedical laboratory sciences for M.Sc. postgraduate students of Arts & Science College / Medical Colleges every academic year during the months of May – June. This Programme consists of Practical demonstration, relevant lectures and “Hands on” training to the participants.
Eligibility : Students undergoing M.Sc. Biochemistry / Microbiology / Biotechnology / Genetics in Arts and Science colleges / Medical colleges / Academic Institutions preferably in the final year of the Programme and research Scientists / Junior Faculty in all Basic Medical Sciences Departments are eligible to apply.

1. COURSE: Biochemistry - CLINICAL Biochemistry, INSTRUMENTATION

Sessions : Techniques: Paper chromatography, TLC, HPLC, spectrophotometry, Flourimetry, Liquid scintillation counter, Ultra centrifugation, electrophoresis: PAGE, SDS-PAGE, western blot, 2D electrophoresis, Isoelectric focusing, commassie & Silver staining, Clinical Biochemistry: Routine analysis using semi auto analyzer and other special investigations using, elisa, and HPLC
2. COURSE: Microbiology– TISSUE CULTURE, VIROLOGY, MOLECULAR Microbiology AND SEROLOGY.

Sessions : Polymerase Chain Reaction to detect / identify infective agents, Tissue culture & Virological techniques, Serological techniques [elisa& Fluorescence Antibody techniques (FANA)].
3. COURSE: GENETICS & molecular biology– CELL CULTURE, KARYOTYPING & ELECTROPHORETIC TECHNIQUES.

4. COURSE: Bioinformatics– SEQUENCE ANALYSIS & MOLECULAR MODELLING
