PhD Program 2016

IITB-Monash Research Academy PhD Program 2016 is now open under an Indian-Australian Research Partnership

Research Projects : Research will be conducted in a team-based approach. Research in The Academy will be truly multi-disciplinary which will allow discoveries to be made at the interface of disciplines. The Academy’s intention is to organise research into classes of problems that seeks to address a key research-theme or sector-goal. Six key research themes have been identified:

  • Advanced Computational Engineering, Simulation and Manufacture
  • Infrastructure Engineering
  • Clean Energy
  • Water
  • Nanotechnology
  • Biotechnology and Stem Cell Research
  • Humanities and Social Sciences

Applications for the June 2016 Intake are now open. The last date for submission of EOI forms is 20 March 2016.

Fees Structure and Scholarship

Payment of fees by PG Students for the Spring Semester 2015-2016

1. Fees:

Currently for spring semester the students pay fee of Rs 49,076 + Rs.16,000 for hostel, mess and transportation within IITB.

2. Scholarship

Students in the joint IITB-Monash PhD program will benefit from the following funding arrangements:

  • Rs 372,000 per annum scholarship for the first two years
  • Rs 420,000 per annum after first two years
  • A grant of up to A$25,850 per annum in Australia
  • A minimum of one year in Australia working with your Monash University co-supervisor (some projects may require you to be in Australia for a longer period of time or undertake more than one trip),Waiver of international student tuition fees at Monash University.

Steps : How to Apply

Step 1: EOI

  • The first step of the admissions process is the Expression of Interest (EOI) stage. In this stage, candidates fill in an EOI form Online.
  • The EOI stage for the June 2016 intake is now in progress.
  • Please click here to fill in the Expression of Interest (EOI) Form which will enable us to adequately evaluate your background, academic record and research interests. If your EOI form is found to be suitable, you will receive an email indicating you are able to proceed to Step 2 of the application stage.
  • If your EOI Form is found to be suitable, you will need to download and complete the full application form, Form A Candidates who are successful in this EOI stage will be invited to go Step-2 once the EOI stage is completed. Contained in this invitation email will be a unique Form A Number (FAN). This email will be sent only after the EOI stage is complete.

Step 2: Form A

  • If your EOI form is found to be suitable, you will be notified via email and you will receive a unique FAN number.
  • You need the FAN number to upload your Form-A online. At this stage you will need to upload your transcripts, publications, certificates, etc and make project selections too.
  • Upon completion of your Form A, please upload it to this site. For logging in to the Form A site, use your unique Form A Number (FAN). Do not give this FAN to anyone else. It is for your use only. Moreover, you can use your FAN only once. At the site, you will need to upload your Form A as well as copies of all of your academic transcripts, publications GATE score sheet, and other supporting documentation. Remember again that you will only have one opportunity to use your FAN to login to the site to upload all of your documentation related to the applications-process.
  • So it will be most optimal if you collect all documentation relating to your application before visiting the site.
Please read the following instructions carefully before completing  form A

(i) Applications for PhD candidature may be lodged at any time, although to be eligible for particular intake rounds, forms need to be submitted by certain dates. Please review The Academy website for more information.

(ii) While we will make every effort to process PhD applications rapidly, assessment of applications may take (at times) two months or more.

(iii) This is an application form only and does not constitute an enrolment for any course in The IITB-Monash Research Academy (“The Academy”) nor does it entitle an applicant to be classified as a student at The Academy.

(iv) An applicant accepted as a candidate by The Academy must enrol at both IITB and Monash by completing the official enrolment forms. Enrolment procedure details will be sent to successful applicants with a letter offering candidature.

(v) Applicants should note that doctoral candidates may not be enrolled for any other degree, diploma or non-degree subjects during their period of candidature.

(vi) All PhD applicants are admitted on a probationary basis for (at least) the first 6-12 months for full-time PhDs.

(vii) Candidates will need to abide by the additional employment conditions of each institution relating to full-time PhDs.

(viii) Please note that applications will not be processed unless full documentation is attached or supplied via the online application registration system.

(ix) All successful applicants to the program will receive a scholarship.

Documentation:
  • Applicants must provide evidence of their qualifications. This should be an official academic record, showing all subjects attempted, grades achieved (including failures) and an explanation of the grading system. The record must be an official transcript or statement of record from the institution in which these studies were attempted.
  • Result notification slips will not be accepted.
  • Originals of documents must be sighted at the interview if you are called for interview. Scanned copies are permitted for the online application part of the process but originals must be brought to interview, or the original document must be made available upon request.
  • Applicants who submit documents in a language other than English must provide an officially certified translation at interview, together with the original documents. Translations supported by uncertified photocopies are unacceptable.
  • Applicants, whose first language is not English, must submit evidence of English language proficiency. See question 7 for details on the evidence required.
  • All applicants are also required to provide a copy of their passport or other evidence of citizenship and provide original at interview if selected.
Submitting your application form and beyond:
STEP-1:

All applicants should complete as many fields of this application form as possible.

Applicants need to upload this form online as part of The Academy’s application process.

Please also scan the following documents and upload these along with your application form:

[D1]- scanned copies of your academic transcripts,

[D2]- scanned copies of your publication record,

[D3]- scanned copies of your GATE, TOEFL, GRE score sheet (if applicable),

[D4]- any other supporting documentation like MTech, BTech thesis, etc.

File names of uploaded files should be meaningful.

For example: MTech-Transcript.JPG or BirthCertificate.PDF and NOT p1.jpg, p2.pdf, etc.

IMPORTANT: Please ensure that the files you are attaching are of a low resolution. At present we are not accepting files that are ZIPPED,(.zip) or .rar files. Feel free to upload as many documents in support of your application.

STEP-2:

If selected for an interview you will be notified by email and are asked to bring with you the following documents:

Step 3: Short-listing for Interview

  • If your Form-A is found to be suitable, you will be notified via email and you will receive an interview invitation.
  • The Interview short-list will be announced only after the Form-A stage is complete.

Step 5: Interviews and Successful Candidates

After the interviews, successful candidates will be notified by email.

    NOTE:The above represents a typical scholarship. The actual scholarship that will be provided to a specific student will depend on their qualifications, grades and performance.
