The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.
The position has its base at the Department of Plant Biology, Uppsala BioCenter, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Linnean Center for Plant Biology. The department undertakes fundamental research on agricultural crops, forest trees, bioenergy crops and model organisms to understand the basis of development, adaptation, plant defense and evolution in plants.
Research Topic: Studies of the Magnaporthe species complex on finger millet.
Duties:
Our research group study plant-pathogen interactions on molecular levels including up to date –omics and related analysis. This project is about the blast disease incited by Magnaporthe fungi on finger millet and is a collaborative project with researchers in Uganda and Malawi, thus the work includes visits and short stays in Africa. The working tasks are to: clarify the fungal species affiliation in this region, run genomic analysis, identify defense genes via transcriptome analysis, improve cultivars and cropping systems.
Qualifications:
The applicant should be highly motivated and have a PhD degree in molecular biology with emphasis on plants, microorganisms, or related fields. Knowledge of NGS, Bioinformatics, and plant immunity responses and Magnaporthe is an advantage. Proven skills in both oral and written scientific English are required. Please note, to be appointed as a postdoc, the applicant should have been awarded her/his PhD no more than three years ago at the time of application. An applicant awarded a PhD degree more than three years ago can be appointed as a researcher.
