About the University:

Our university was founded almost a hundred years ago in the aftermath of the Great War. The men and women who built this new institution hoped that it would be not only a living memorial to the darkness of their recent past, but a beacon of hope for the future. Their aim was that sacrifices made in war should be commemorated through education and research that would change the world for the better.

Job Purpose:

To develop and carry out independent research to achieve defined milestones, whilst contributing as a senior team member to a wider research programme. The BBSRC has awarded a grant to Marco R Oggioni (Genetics, UOL), Nick Croucher (Imperial College) and Stephen Bentley (Wellcome Sanger Institute). One of the post doc positions is based in Leicester and aims to investigate the epigenetic impact of phase variable methylation systems in the food pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, the drug resistant pathogen Enterococcus faecalis and the zoonotic pathogen Streptococcus suis. The main aim is to find common traits in these phase variable methylation systems. Work will follow up on the recent discovery of phase variable methylation in the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae (Manso et al Nature Communications 2014). The post will be for one year with a proposed start date of the 1st of March 2016.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:

Essential:

PhD in Molecular Genetics, Microbiology or related subject (awarded or submitted).*

• Experience in standard techniques of bacteriology and molecular genetics.*

• Experience of working with bacteria.*

• Extensive experience of a wide range of molecular techniques.*

• Experience in cell culture techniques.*

• Handling of bacterial pathogens.*

• Specialist knowledge of microbial research field.*

Desirable:

• Evidence of research productivity (e.g. research publications in peer review journals, presentations, etc)

Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

Essential:

• High level of proficiency in English, sufficient to undertake research, teaching and administrative activities utilising English Language materials and to communicate effectively with staff and students

• Ability to contribute to and work well in a team.*

• Good computer literacy.*

• Good written and oral communication skills.*

• Ability to plan, implement and deliver programmes of work effectively and to the required standard.
