Role Description:

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the group of Gavin Thomas to work on a project to elucidate the molecular basis of body odour production by the human underarm microbiome. In previous collaborative worth with Unilever, we have identified a small number of Staphyloccocal species that are responsible for the production of the thioalcohol component of body odour. You will be undertake a series of biochemical and genetic studies working with Staphylococci and its purified proteins to understand the molecular basis of malodour precursor uptake and subsequence metabolism, to provide significant insight into the molecular mechanism behind the formation of human body odour.  You will be an experienced microbiologist or biochemist who has worked with purification and Assay of recombinant proteins and ideally also with membrane transporter proteins. The project will involved the reconstitution and in vitro Assay of membrane transporters as well as the biochemical characterisation of a number of soluble Enzymes. The project will also work directly on the Staphylococci to create strains deficient in malodour production and so you will ideally have experience in Microbiology and microbial genetics.

This exciting project is funded by the BBSRC LINK scheme, and has a parallel researcher working on related aspects of malodour production under the supervision of Dr Gordon James in Unilever. You will work collaboratively with Unilever on some of the project objectives. You will join a large active and dynamic research community in molecular Microbiology in the York Biology department.

Qualifications and Experience:

You will have a PhD degree in Microbiology/Biochemistry or a related subject or be close to completion.  You are likely to have recent relevant research experience in enzyme characterisation and ideally worked with membrane proteins, although this is not essential. Some experience of bacterial genetics is also desirable.  The post is fixed term for a period of up to 36 months with a start date of 1st April 2016.

The starting salary will be within the range of £30,738 - £37,768 a year.
