Biology & Biochemistry

Salary: £31,656 per annum
Placed On: Tuesday 24 November 2015
Closing Date: Monday 04 January 2016
Interview Date: To be confirmed
Reference: FY3588

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Bath, one of the UK’s leading universities.

As an integral member of the Gebhard lab, you will investigate the interaction between the transporter BceAB and the regulatory system BceRS, which together impart resistance against peptide antibiotics in the model organismBacillus subtilis. You will use an array of mutational and biochemical approaches to identify Protein interaction sites and elucidate the mechanisms by which the transporter controls signalling.

This BBSRC-funded project aims to understand the evolutionary origins and molecular mechanisms of antimicrobial peptide resistance in Gram-positive bacteria. The work will be carried out in collaboration with researchers at Bath and in Munich, Germany.

Qualifications and Experience:

As the successful candidate, you have a PhD in Microbiology or Biochemistry, experience in bacterial molecular biology, ProteinBiochemistry, microbiological and molecular biology techniques, as well as a keen interest in the mechanisms by which bacteria respond to their environments and the evolutionary origins of such signalling pathways. Experience in Protein localisation studies, fluorescence microscopy and/or basic Bioinformatics would be of advantage. The University of Bath and our Department are committed to equality of opportunity. We particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, including women.

The post is offered on a full time, fixed term contract basis (36 months), and is available from March 2016. It is anticipated that interviews will be held in January 2016.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Dr Susanne Gebhard on +44 1225 386421 or ats.gebhard@bath.ac.uk.
