Applications are invited for an Assistant Professor to assist with teaching duties associated with a joint undergraduate degree programme in Brewing and Distilling, held at Heriot-Watt University and at Tianjin University of Science and Technology. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching (lectures and tutorials) of SCQF levels 7, 8 and 9 courses. The courses encompass key topics in Biology including aspects of Molecular and Microbial Biology, Plant Biology, and Food and Beverage Science. In addition, the post holder may assist with laboratory management duties, routine maintenance of cultures and will conduct some simple experiments, as necessary, for a research laboratory in the field of Environmental Toxicology.
The post holder will, with support from members of the academic staff, be expected to carry out duties that relate to the organization and delivery of undergraduate teaching, academic student support for Tianjin based students, and teaching administration.
The successful candidate will have a PhD and post-doctoral experience in a cognate subject area, possess excellent communication skills, be enthusiastic about interacting with undergraduates, and be prepared to travel and work in China for periods of up to one month at a time.
Key duties and responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Contribute to the teaching (lectures and tutorials) of up to six Biology courses at SCQF levels 7, 8 and 9 which cover topics in the areas of Molecular and Microbial Biology, Plant Biology, and Food and Beverage Science
- Contribute to back-filling of teaching duties for other staff whilst they may be in China
- Undertake assessment of coursework and examinations, under the supervision of senior academic staff.
- Undertake basic administrative duties.
- Contribute to the management and running of a research laboratory for environmental toxicology
- Be required to register as a University teacher.
Education, Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum qualification: Doctorate
- Minimum qualification: A postgraduate degree in Biology or a cognate subject discipline related to Biology.
ESSENTIAL
- Experience of undergraduate teaching in Biology or cognate discipline.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to engage with students in the delivery of lectures and tutorials.
- Versatility and willingness to travel and work collaboratively with colleagues
DESIRABLE
- Preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials and web based assessment. Familiarity with learning management software such as Blackboard, or equivalent.
- Experience of providing academic support to student groups.
