About the Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany
The University Botany Laboratory (UBL) was established in 1930 and it acquired the CAS status from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1964 and retaining the status for more than
50 consecutive years. The Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany is well known for its pioneering research contribution on Plant Pathology, Mycology, Algology and Herbal Science. Eminent
Professors like M.O.P. Iyengar, T.S. Sadasivan, C.V. Subramanian, A. Mahadevan, J. Lalithakumari, N. Anand, R. Rengasamy and N. Raaman have served as Directors of this Centre. Currently, Dr. N. Mathivanan is the Director-in-charge. CAS in Botany is fully equipped with all necessary laboratory facilities and other infrastructure.
About the Conference
The field of 'Mycology' has been recognized as one the thrust areas of Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany. Fungal biodiversity happened to be one of the prime areas of research
wherein the Centre has contributed significantly. It has been estimated that only 5% of the fungi available in India have been identified and are being exploited for the production of antibiotics, industrial Enzymes, food, feed, leather, paper and textile processing. The remaining 95% fungi, needs to be identified and evaluated for their potential application. Therefore, the urgent task of the scientists working with fungi all over the world is to catalogue the fungi and to undertake
challenging research for identifying potential fungi for novel bioactivities, evaluating them for their biocontrol potential and developing newer techniques for the production of edible fungi
(mushrooms). Therefore, the objective of the conference is to bringing mycologists, scientists, scholars and students working on diverse aspects such as fungal taxonomy, Biochemistry, molecular biology, Biotechnology& pathogenesis and control measures (plant, animal and human) together on a single platform and to discuss about the challenges and opportunities that fungi offer.
The National Conference on “Challenges and Opportunities in Mycological Research (NCCOMR-2016)” will feature the following themes:
- Fungal diversity, systematics and evolution
- Biotechnology& Industrial applications of fungi
- Mycoses in human & animals; it control measures
- Role of fungi in Agriculture as pathogens, biocontrol agents and biofertilizers
- Myconanotechnology
- Mushroom cultivation for food, feed and medicine
