The mission of the Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research, Inc. (PAVIR) is to facilitate research and education activities conducted at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS).  The range of research activities is broad and includes special emphasis on: Cardiovascular medicine, Cancer, Mental health – including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Chronic inflammatory disease, Stem cell/regenerative medicine

The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Life Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow position to investigate the contribution of inflammation to the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Nicolls, Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Principal Investigator at PAVIR. Mentorship will also be provided by the Research Director.

Please note, all PAVIR funded Postdoctoral Fellows will hold a Postdoctoral Fellow appointment through Stanford University and will have access to Stanford resources.

Duties :

  • Conduct experiments investigating the pulmonary hypertension in rodents;
  • Study effects of eicosanoid biology in the development of inflammatory pulmonary hypertension;
  • Study in vivo effects of pulmonary hypertension by pulmonary artery catheterization and echocardiography of rats;
  • Perform complex biochemical and molecular biology techniques;
  • Serve as main contact for experimental work; Train other fellows and research

    assistants;

  • Prepare reports and scientific papers for publication from the data acquired.

Requirements:

  • EDUCATION : Ph.D. or M.D. in Immunology, molecular biology, Biochemistry, Stem Cell Biology, or in a related field;
  • EXPERIENCE : No postgraduate work required; Experience of in vivo studies using rodent models desired;
  • Strong knowledge of chemical/cellular/molecular biology including in vivo characterization of rodent models and performing complex biochemical and molecular biology techniques;
  • Experience with immunological research including in vitro assays;
  • Understanding and working knowledge of research lab requirements/procedures and scientific research methodology;
  • Strong scientific writing skills and demonstrated capacity to drive first author publications;
  • Strong knowledge of research procedures and protocols gained through education or experience;
  • Experience in a variety of research techniques/methods and follow-up data collection;
  • Ability to work independently and within a team context;
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), including public speaking skills;
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail;
  • Proven technical and analytical

    skills;

  • Ability to troubleshoot an experiment as necessary;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and databases;
  • Intermediate knowledge of math and statistics
