Admission to PhD Programme to start from December 2014
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati
Applications are invited for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme starting in December 2014. The departments/centres and areas in which these programme will be offered are:
- Department : Department of Biotechnology
- Streams : All areas of Biotechnology
Categories of PhD Students :
- REGULAR : A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. He/she receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.
- SPONSORED (FULL-TIME) : A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
- SELF-FINANCED (FULL-TIME) : A student in this category works full-time towards the PhD Programme. He/She must have at least one year of professional experience in the respective field, with supporting document(s) of proof. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student
- PROJECT STAFF : This category refers to a student who is working on a sponsored project in the Institute and is admitted to the PhD Programme to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her PhD Programme, his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he/she is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (Form II) must be attached with the application.
- PART-TIME : A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form III) must be enclosed at the time of application.
- EXTERNAL : This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form IV) must be enclosed at the time of application.
Eligibility Criteria for Admission into PhD Programme :
- Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
- Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
- Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Science from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)/Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
- Four-year Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering/Technology/Design/Science (from other than IITs/IISc) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.
Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 19-12-2014. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by 27-01-2015. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CPI, and other conditions like valid GATE score/CEED score/NET or INSPIRE certificate (as may be applicable) etc., as mentioned under eligibility criteria for respective programmes. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.
