PhD position in Microbiology at Ghent University, Belgium
Job description : The Laboratory for Microbiology (www.lmg.ugent.be), Ghent University (www.ugent.be) invites applications for a PhD position. We seek exceptional candidates to complement our focus on microbial biodiversity, biogeochemistry, ecology and taxonomy. We are looking for highly motivated candidates interested in the development of a semi-automated, miniaturized pipeline for high-throughput isolation of microorganisms. The successful candidate should enjoy teamwork, including the supervision of bachelor and master students, as well as problem-solving and technical challenges.
Profile of the candidate :
- Master in Biotechnology, biology, environmental sciences, bio-engineering or equivalent
- Strong affinity for Microbiology, in particular isolation/cultivation of bacteria. Experience in Microbiology and knowledge of basic Microbiology skills are a prerequisite
- Good technical background
- Knowledge of Python and/or R is an advantage
- Good oral and written communication skills in English are strictly required
- Enthusiastic, motivated, result-driven and critical personality
- Good organizational, writing and communication skills
- Able to work well both independently and in a team environment
How to apply : We offer a Ph.D. scholarship for one year, and extension for another three years after positive evaluation. The preferred start date is January 1st 2015.
