PhD student in Department of Pediaterics, UMCG, Germany
Job Description :
- The early life environment exerts short- and long-term effects on metabolic health of the individual. This process has become known as ”metabolic programming”. Understanding the mechanisms by which the early life environment can program the future development would allow preventive and interventional strategies, aimed at long-term healthy ageing. One example observed in animal models involves the lipid composition and structure in early life nutrition. Specific compositional or structural manipulations of dietary lipids in early life affect the body composition and metabolic parameters in adult life. The mechanisms by which metabolic programming is mediated are still largely unknown.
- Our laboratory has developed the expertise for the detailed characterization of lipid absorption and metabolism, of metabolic programming and of the development of metabolic diseases. Nutritional, pharmacological, analytical and metabolic approaches will be used in short- and long-term experiments to delineate the mechanisms by which early life nutritional lipids program adult body composition and metabolic health. Techniques/approaches that will be used include mouse and rat models, cell culture and molecular biology. The ultimate goal is to identify relevant mechanisms as potential targets of prevention or early intervention to obtain long-term metabolic health.
What we need :
- You are a highly motivated candidate with a background in biology or (bio)medicine and a keen interest in physiology.
- You should be flexible and accurate and have good social and communication skills.
- Animal experimentation forms an essential part of this project.
- You will publish the data in scientific journals.
- After four years a thesis must be written and a PhD degree should be obtained.
