Doctoral student position in Cancer Pharmacology at Karolinska Institute, Denmark

The main objectives of the Department of Oncology-Pathology are basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. 37 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved and we have around 120 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in Pathology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine for medical students, as well as for Tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and Pathology courses for opticians.

A doctoral position is an available doctoral education project to which a PhD student is to be recruited. After the selection process the process for admission to doctoral education will commence. An admission decision will not be taken until an individual study plan has been approved by the departmental admission board.

Research group :

  • The Department of Oncology-Pathology is searching for a student to work with professor Stig Linder (main supervisor) and dr. Padraig D'Arcy (assistant supervisor) in a project which aims to understand the mechanisms of action of cancer drugs that affect the ubiquitin-proteasome system.
  • The PhD project has received partial funding for a PhD student position through Karolinska Institutet funds (KID-funding). The supervisors have expertise in the fields of tumor biology and drug discovery.

Duties of the student : Project tasks include standard methods in cell and molecular biology, e.g. analysis of proteins, analysis of RNA expression, cell culture, transfection, PCR and immunochemistry. Animal testing may be included in the study. The PhD student will analyze experimental data, interpret and present results and participate in the writing of scientific papers.

Skills and personal qualities : We are seeking a highly motivated and creative person. The candidate should have good communication skills and must be able to interact effectively with other members of the research team. Emphasis will be placed on personal motivation, expertise, analytical skills and previous experience of laboratory work. An excellent ability to communicate in English is an absolute requirement. The candidate should have a master's degree in molecular biosciences and biomedicine. Previous experience in the fields of molecular biology, tumor biology and Protein chemistry is considered as an advantage for this project. Candidates should have at least 6 months experience in practical laboratory work.

Assessment criteria : A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Karolinska Institutet uses the following bases of assessment: 

  • Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research 
  • Analytical skill 
  • Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject
