National Symposium on Frontiers in Modern Biology
MARCH 24-25, 2014
Dept. of Zoology, Dr.H.S.Gour Central University, Sagar

SCOPE OF THE SYMPOSIUM :
India has announced 2010-20 as the decade of innovation. DST, Govt. of India has taken a bold initiative to structure Science & Technology, India (STI) Policy 2013 and have envisioned a roadmap for milestones to be achieved in specific timelines. This requires formulating strategies and creating necessary framework to integrate science, technology and innovation. To enable coherent and swift integration of these three defined structural arms, novel mechanistic ways and creation of model systems must be assigned high priority. Besides, capacity building, we also need to address challenges our system is facing today in terms of food, nutrition, environment, habitat and affordable health care. Post six decades from our independence we have realized that systems of innovations must not bypass larger sections of the society, rather it should be inclusive. Science-led technological innovation must not emphasize on select areas of economic importance but needs renewed thrust on socio-economic backward regions (such as Bundelkhand) providing apt inertia to drive ahead in future. The focus of the conference is to integrate Life-Chemical-Physical & Technological Sciences on a common platform

For a developing country and emerging economy such as India tackling high rates of social exclusion and poverty are important challenges for inclusive developmental strategies. In spite of successful innovation experiences, substantial inequalities, high rates of poverty and social exclusion remain testimony to the fact that built-up innovation capacities are not necessarily inclusive. Although several developing nations have successfully devised “islands of excellence” (e.g. centres of excellence, national universities, public and private sector agencies), vast majority of individuals and firms lack even basic innovation capabilities, thus leading to social inequality. However, at the same time innovative products targeted at, or produced by, low- and middle-income groups should be pursued to address inequalities. It is generally accepted that research requires large scale investments. But this in turn generates knowledge and facilitates understanding for providing solutions leading to unique innovations. Innovation converts knowledge into monetary value. Therefore, for a developing economy such as ours innovation is a key to science and technology based solutions and is currently realized as the central domain towards formulating developmental goals.

India has announced 2010-20 as the decade of innovation. For us to achieve sustained and inclusive growth, creating a scientific milieu will be a basic requirement. This requires formulating strategies and creating necessary framework to integrate science, technology and innovation. Budelkhand, one of the most backward regions of the country provides an apt milieu to create an integrative model system that can best serve as an example for inclusive growth. Dr. Harisingh Gour Central University (NAAC A+ credited) located at Sagar in Bundelkhand area has been embarked upon the responsibility to drive the scientific enterprise in this part of the country.

HOST :
The Department of Zoology at Dr. Harisingh Gour Central University, Sagar, is one of the pioneer departments of this university since the inception of the University from 1946. It has contributed immensely towards understanding the patho-physiology of lymphocyte homeostasis in type 2 diabetes mellitus; devising a dendritic cell engineered vaccine for gastro-intestinal malignancies; unraveling the mechanistic insights of mitochondrial stress mediated epigenetic perturbations; evaluation of anti-carcinogenic activity of various herbal/plant products; impairment of nuclear-cross talk in stress-induced premature senescence. Over these years the department has developed comprehensive collaborations with centers of excellence and has been pursuing cutting-edge research in areas of top national priority.

The department has a core-strength of 16 faculty members trained in advanced scientific biological research at institutes of national/international repute. The renewed focus of the department presently involves molecular carcinogenesis, immunology & cell signaling, bone biology (with special emphasis on osteo-immunology), fish biology, entomology, environmental Biotechnology, vermi-Biotechnology and molecular medicine. At present the department has around 300 UG students, 40 PG students and more than 25 research scholars doing cutting edge research in various aspects of modern biology. Therefore, the department provides a unique platform to bring together scientists, academia and industry to deliberate on the important issue of innovations in science and technology for inclusive development, the central dogma of STI policy of Govt. of India’s Ministry of S & T.
